Protonix (Pantoprazole) is a medication that is used to reduce the amount of acid in your stomach. Protonix is in a group of medications called Proton pump inhibitors (PPI). While a PPI may sound complex it is actually quite simple. It means that Protonix turns off several of the acid-producing pumps in the stomach to produce a lower amount of acid. Protonix has been proven to heal the symptoms associated with acid reflux disease such as shallow sores in the lining of the esophagus and daytime and even nighttime symptoms. Protonix is a prescription drug that is used to treat erosive gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD.
Gastro esophageal reflux disease, commonly referred to, as GERD or acid reflux, is a condition in which the liquid content of the stomach backs up or refluxes into the esophagus. The liquid can inflame and damage the lining of the esophagus. GERD is a chronic condition. Once it begins, it usually is life-long. If there is injury to the lining of the esophagus, this also is a chronic condition. Moreover, after the esophagus has healed with Protonix treatment and that treatment is stopped, the injury will return in most patients within a few months.
